Sprint

In the beginning of the 70s the Sprint was established as 3rd Biathlon discipline. It's a kind of short Individual race and became popular very fast. 1974 were in Minsk the first Sprint world championships. Especially the more weak shots love this discipline.
The athletes start, depending on the number of competitors, in an interval of 30 or 60 seconds and then do 3 loops of 3.4 and 3 km (at women races three times 2.5.km). So the men have to go a distance of 10km and the women of 7.5km.
After the first loop is a prone shooting and after the second a standing shooting session. For every missed target the athlete has to do one penalty loop.
